Mike Huckabee Tells Same-Sex Couples who Want to Adopt, "Children are Not Puppies"

"Straight" Baptist Republican, FOX News host, and Presidential hopeful Mike Huckabee came out of the bigot closet (again) in an interview with College of New Jersey's The Perspective, declaring total war on LGBT civil rights (including civil unions), in the name of his Jesus and his bible.

Arkansan Huckabee told LGBT persons, who want to adopt: "Children are not puppies."  Maybe he should explain that one to "God's [sic] Rotweiller."

He also equated homosexuals with drug users, polygamists, and perpetrators of incest.

He [Huckabee] continues to oppose any government recognition of same-sex relationships. Even civil unions are "not necessary," Huckabee said. "I think there's been a real level of being disingenuous on the part of the gay and lesbian community with their goal of civil unions," he alleged, referring to LGBT activists who first claimed that their goal in several states was to enact civil unions, but subsequently launched efforts to implement full marriage rights.

Huckabee went on to draw parallels between homosexuality and other lifestyles that are considered by some to be morally aberrant. "You don't go ahead and accommodate every behavioral pattern that is against the ideal," he said of same-sex marriage. "That would be like saying, well, there are a lot of people who like to use drugs, so let's go ahead and accommodate those who want who use drugs. There are some people who believe in incest, so we should accommodate them. There are people who believe in polygamy, so we should accommodate them."

He also affirmed support for a law in Arkansas that prohibits same-sex couples from becoming adoptive or foster parents. "I think this is not about trying to create statements for people who want to change the basic fundamental definitions of family," Huckabee said. "And always we should act in the best interest of the children, not in the seeming interest of the adults."

"Children are not puppies," he continued. "This is not a time to see if we can experiment and find out, how does this work?"
Here are some cold hard facts for Mr. Huckabee to consider, care of the Urban Institute and Holy Bullies and Headless Monsters:
* More than one in three lesbians have given birth and one in six gay men have fathered or adopted a child.

* More than half of gay men and 41 percent of lesbians want to have a child.
* An estimated two million GLB people are interested in adopting.
* An estimated 65,500 adopted children are living with a lesbian or gay parent.
* More than 16,000 adopted children are living with lesbian and gay parents in California, the highest number among the states.
* Gay and lesbian parents are raising four percent of all adopted children in the United States.
* Same-sex couples raising adopted children are older, more educated, and have more economic resources than other adoptive parents.
* Adopted children with same-sex parents are younger and more likely to be foreign born.
* An estimated 14,100 foster children are living with lesbian or gay parents.
* Gay and lesbian parents are raising three percent of foster children in the United States.
* A national ban on GLB foster care could cost from $87 to $130 million.
* Costs to individual states could range from $100,000 to $27 million.

Subordinating Women and Child Sexual Abuse in Catholic Church

In reaction to the signature that shows Pope Benedict XVI refused to defrock child rapist Father Stephen Kiesle of Oakland, columnist Maureen Dowd discussed her experience, as a Catholic woman, and how she moved from judging Islam's abuses of women into the realization that the Catholic Church does the same thing: using scripture and tradition to subjugate women to a second class status.

Dowd's is one of the finest pieces I have seen on the Catholic Church in quite some time.

I've been asking the same question for years: how do Catholic women remain in a church where they don't have equal status as men?

The women, with whom I've been able to discuss this question, have responded in various ways, including: hoping to still change the church from within, being used to it, needing the Catholic sacraments because communion in other churches doesn't have the "real presence" of Jesus, and/or fearfully admitting "I don't know why I stay."

As a gay Catholic, who's god-given sexuality was deemed intrinsically depraved, and as victim of sexual abuse, when I began asking "Why do I stay?" I realized that it was time to move on and seek truth, peace, and joy elsewhere.

When I was in Saudi Arabia, I had tea and sweets with a group of educated and sophisticated young professional women.  I asked why they were not more upset about living in a country where women’s rights were strangled, an inbred and autocratic state more like an archaic men’s club than a modern nation. They told me, somewhat defensively, that the kingdom was moving at its own pace, glacial as that seemed to outsiders.  How could such spirited women, smart and successful on every other level, acquiesce in their own subordination?
I was puzzling over that one when it hit me: As a Catholic woman, I was doing the same thing.  I, too, belonged to an inbred and wealthy men’s club cloistered behind walls and disdaining modernity. I, too, remained part of an autocratic society that repressed women and ignored their progress in the secular world.  I, too, rationalized as men in dresses allowed our religious kingdom to decay and to cling to outdated misogynistic rituals, blind to the benefits of welcoming women’s brains, talents and hearts into their ancient fraternity.
To circumscribe women, Saudi Arabia took Islam’s moral codes and orthodoxy to extremes not outlined by Muhammad; the Catholic Church took its moral codes and orthodoxy to extremes not outlined by Jesus. In the New Testament, Jesus is surrounded by strong women and never advocates that any woman — whether she’s his mother or a prostitute — be treated as a second-class citizen.
Negating women is at the heart of the church’s hideous — and criminal — indifference to the welfare of boys and girls in its priests’ care.
The church that through the ages taught me and other children right from wrong did not know right from wrong when it came to children. Crimes were swept under the rectory rug, and molesters were protected to molest again for the “good of the universal church.” And that is bad, very bad — a mortal sin.

Family Feud Contestant: Everybody Knows Ellen Degeneres Hates America

The fun-loving Family Feud turned ugly this week, when a family was clearing the board on the question "Name something about Ellen DeGeneres that everybody knows," and Mike, the patriarch lording over his family of females, said everybody knows that Ellen DeGeneres doesn't like her country very much.  What?

I guess that Mike looked at the board and saw "She's gay," "Talk show host," "She's funny," and "Good dancer," and concluded that Ellen must be anti-American.  Welcome to the 21st Century!

Here's a video from the Ellen DeGeneres Show, as she watches the Family Feud debacle with great humor.
