Another Televangelist Infidelity; What These Christian Hypocrites Have in Common

Daystar founder and Christian televangelist, Marcus Lamb, has been caught in adultery.  So, besides destroying the sanctity of marriage and wearing bad makeup, what does Lamb share in common with his unfaithful televangelist brethren? Here's Rachel Maddow to discern the signs of the times:

Here's Maddow's visual aid.

CNN's Report on the Minnesota Catholic Church's Anti-Gay DVD, Archbishop Nienstedt's Response: LGBT Allies' "Eternal Salvation" at Risk

The fallout continues following Catholic Archbishop Nienstedt's offensive anti-gay-civil-rights DVD release.  In the CNN report embedded below, the Catholic parents of gay child are told by Neinstedt that their "eternal salvation may well depend upon a conversion of heart on this topic."

Also in the CNN report is Lucinda Naylor, the artist fired by the Catholic Church for her protest of the DVD release.  After Naylor, a few "loving" Catholics are interviewed, who want to help "sinful" gays forsake their ways by putting billboards up and commercials on TV every night that expose homo's "sins."  But these loving Catholics aren't bullies, because it's not picking on a homosexual to fire them for getting married.

New York Yankees Fans Bully Others with Homophobic "Y.M.C.A." Parody

There is something incredibly broken about a nation that protects this kind of speech.
In the video "Homophobia Literally Kills: Yankees Game" which is posted below, a group of New York Yankees fans surrounds a fans from the opposing team and shout a hate-filled homophobic parody of the Village People's "Y.M.C.A." at the men.  You can hear the bullies' friends giggling in the background.

Yankees fans routinely sing a version of "Y.M.C.A." to fans of opposing teams during their ballgames that demonizes gay people. These are clips from other YouTube videos over the past few years that show Yankees fans in action singing this homophobic songs at opposing fans. As NAACP Chairman Julian Bond has said, "homophobia literally kills", and it is this kind of homophobia that leads to anti-gay bullying and harassment at our schools and LGBT teenagers to commit suicide.
The site After Elton explains that as of yesterday there were still some Yankees' fans continuing this "tradition" of homo-berating the opposing teams fans:
Earlier today we posted a video of New York Yankee fans singing a shockingly homophobic version of "Y.M.C.A." A short time ago I spoke with a spokesman for the Yankees who told me that video was from four years ago and that the Bleacher Creatures (a group of fans seated in a specific section of Yankee Stadium) had been told that homophobic lyrics would not be tolerated.
That turns to be true and not true. While the most virulently anti-gay version of that song is no longer being performed by most fans in Section 203 , the Bleacher Creatures clearly still don't get what is offensive about their antics because they have numerous videos posted of themselves from as recently as several weeks ago singing "Y.M.C.A." with the lyrics changed to "Y. R. U. Gay?" as a way to denigrate fans of opposing teams.
This is a perfect example of the "trickle-down homophobia" explained by Kathy Griffin.  When adults engage in blatant anti-gay activity, children learn that it's okay to violently pick on people different from themselves.  Children see.  And learn.  Some of them take to the streets of the Bronx and kill.

I'm curious to know when this Yankees' "tradition" began in relation to the wave of HIV/AIDS death's that decimated New York's population of gay men.  Really, it doesn't matter.  The fact that this taunt is still being performed and posted online (by bragging Yankees fans) is an front to every gay man who has died of AIDS.  Shame on the Yankee's organization.  Unless, I see some spectacular mea culpas, I'm done rooting for them.

In a previous post, I said "Bullying doesn't end after high school.  It becomes free speech."

     Here's the proof:

Dolan Forced Gay-Friendly Catholic Parish to March with Nameless Banner in Pride Parade

Banner Bashing Timothy Dolan via SILive/AP

When he's not busy working his way up to cardinal by defending Pope Benedict's handling of priest rapists, he's picking on the gay friendly parish of St. Francis Xavier and their gay-friendly outreach at New York's Pride parade.

In a letter to his parish, Father Joseph Costatino wrote:
In past years, a group of parishioners from our parish who are members of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans-gendered (LGBT) Ministries have participated in the Gay Pride March. They displayed a banner identifying themselves as parishioners of St. Francis Xavier parish. This year, Archbishop Dolan has requested that this group refrain from displaying the parish banner as they March. The participation of parishioners in the March provides an opportunity to spread the message of God’s unconditional love and thus is a form of evangelization... Nevertheless, the display of the parish banner may give the false impression that the parish is somehow serving as a sponsoring organization or officially endorsing other sentiments that may appear in the course of the March.  Avoiding such confusion is the motivation for the Archbishop’s request.
+Tim Smoking out the Masses via Church Times
Dolan wouldn't want Catholics to be seen or identified with "sinners."  That would be too much like that crazy Jesus, who surrounded himself with "sinners," befriended them, and supposedly died for them.

Dolan is a homophobic hypocrite and needs to lay off the incense and lace for a while.

The news report embedded below tells the story of +Tim's telling the group from Francis Xavier to march with their anonymous (Catholic-friendly) banner.

Ex-Gay Christian Adam Hood Condemns Homosexuality while Wearing a Gold Ascot, What Is There to be Learned from This?

Adam Hood, of the fundamentalist Christian group Recycle Your Faith, is the star of a recent set of videos about homosexuality being "one of the worst forms of depravity."  Hood is a self-proclaimed ex-gay, who was saved by Jesus and made straight by what he calls a miracle.

He delivers his message adorned in a gold ascot.
Image via Towleroad
The first begins with the quote:
A recent study shows that 92% of non-Christians ages 16-29 associate Christianity with being "anti-homosexual."
Hood begins by saying that 100% of "outsiders" should view Christianity as anti-homosexual, because his bible is "so clear."  He speaks with pleasure and pride about how anti-gay his understanding of his god and his bible is.

Later, he goes into the typical "sin isn't right just because it feels good" Christian moralizing.  What he forgets is that according to Christian morals and scripture pride, judgment of others, and self-righteousness feel good, too, but indulging in these sins, while in a video wearing a gold ascot, is apparently okay.

Here is an example of some of Hood's reasoning:
[Homosexuality]'s a sin that God [sic] will damn.  If they stay in that sin, they will be damned to hell and rightly so, because they need to be quarantined because they will continue in their rebellion and try to bring that gangrene into heaven. God's [sic] not having it, okay?
This type of thought in certain religious people and their religious institutions is the basis for all the anti-gay laws in the world.  If their gods will quarantine gays by dropping them into hell, then building their god's kingdom involves quarantining/segregating/burning gays here on earth.

Hood also blames homosexuality on boys having been fatherless or sexually abused by a man, which are both myths.  There are plenty of homosexuals, who had loving fathers and/or were never sexually abused.  It sounds like he's going to one of my old Catholic counselors.  Also, very Catholic are his self-projected conclusions about what is natural and unnatural.

Hood continues in a second video telling the story of his drug addiction, affinity for fame and wearing costumes, and his involvement in witchcraft, all of which took place while he was gay.

His conversion came when a homeless man read his mind and exposed his worries about going to hell.  This triggered a mental breakdown, during which orderlies were tying Hood down.  In that moment, he prayed and found peace in Jesus.  He was checked into a psych ward, where he believed that a possessed man in the next room was going to tear him apart.  When Hood "whispered" Jesus' name, the possessed man went mad.  Then, Hood became a "hardcore, on fire Christian" stating, "I mean martyr me for Jesus" Christian.

Hood admits that he had been on every drug you can imagine.  He never mentions detox and his mental breakdown as possible reasons for the mind reading power of the homeless and for possessed patients trying to silence his prayers.  No, it's all because he was gay.

Hood then talks about the "miracle" of his god giving him "natural affection" for a woman.  Notice that he doesn't say "sexual attraction."  He talks about his first orgasm in his wife on their wedding night, how he screamed Jesus' name.  He talks about how much he loves women, loves his wife's body, and loves women physically.  But, he never says that he loves them sexually.

Kate Winlet via WHYfame?
I remember speaking like this, back in high school, college, and seminary, while trying to pass as straight.  As long as I talked about how much I appreciated the physical beauty of women's bodies, how much I verbalized that Kate Winslet was gorgeous, and how much I loved my numerous female friends, then I wasn't gay.  It didn't matter that, when it came to sex, I wanted men.

Here is Hood's description of being part of the "gay community" and how it felt:
Probably at the lowest pit of my drug run, I ended up in the gay community in San Francisco, and, um, was a pretty well known club celebrity in the city, um, here in the city, and, um, dressed up everyday in the most extravagant wow costumes.  I felt like it was family.  You know, the gay community offered you celebrity.  It offered you affirmation, even men would pay attention to me.  Well, growing up my dad wasn't at home, I didn't have that.  But I didn't understand these things while I was in it.  I thought it was the rightest thing for me to be doing.  I thought that was who I was, and it was even righteous and holy.  I really did.
This sounds just like my experience of seminary and priesthood, which promised me family/brotherhood, made me a parochial celebrity, inundated me with affirmation and the attention of men that I called "Father," and allowed me to dress up in extravagant costumes.  I was surrounded by people that assured me what I was doing was righteous and holy and believed that it was the rightest thing.

In many ways, I see myself in Mr. Hood.  We shared the same struggle of trying to reconcile our homosexuality and religion.  Where he went down the dark rabbit hole of drugs that exists in a certain circles of the gay population, I went down the rabbit hole of sexual abuse, power, and manipulation in certain circles of the Catholic priesthood.

Our experiences of these cultures were tainted with pain and scandal, but that doesn't mean that every member of these groups is depraved or abusive.  I make strong statements on this blog about the hypocrisies and hatred that religious persons espouse, but I also know that not all religious people share these odious beliefs.  Sadly, Mr. Hood is not one of those people.

Here are the videos.

Iowa Family Policy Center's Anti-Gay Candidate Loses by 49% Margin

Under the weather again today folks, so my submissions will be few.

Joe.My.God. has been reporting on anti-gay Iowa Family Policy Center (which received $3 million in federal grants--your tax dollars--to lobby against LGBT rights), whose president Church Hurley has been attacking religious people who support marriage equality and civil rights legislation for LGBT persons.  Last week, Hurley called these compassionate pastors "confused at best and blatantly evil at worst" and went on to question their leadership credentials by calling them "pseudo pastors." Mr. Hurley is not a pastor.

Leading up to last night's primary, Hurley's Iowa Family Policy Center threw a bunch of money behind their candidate and tried to make the campaign about marriage equality and the horrors of sodomy.

From One Iowa via press release:
Pro-equality legislator Ako Abdul-Samad scored a decisive victory in tonight’s House District 66 Democratic primary. Clair Rudison, with the full force of the Iowa Family Policy Center behind him, won only 25% of the vote compared to 74% for Abdul-Samad. Voters rejected the negative and divisive tactics he and the Iowa Family Policy Center used to try to smear his opponent. "We congratulate Rep. Ako Abdul-Samad on his decisive victory and welcome his continued leadership at the statehouse," said Jenison.
Hurley had vowed to make the election about one thing: gay marriage. As it turns out, Iowa's voters only care about the stuff that actually affects their lives. Sad trombone for Chuckie!

Jennifer Knapp Comes Out, Challenges the Authority of Bob Botsford: Why Do Americans Check Their Brains at the Doors of their Churches?

Christian Singer Jennifer Knapp, who just came out as a lesbian, was a guest on Larry King Live last week.  She took on ex-televangelist and sexual abuse/gay prostitute aficionado Ted Haggard, who claims  he is now cured of the gay, and Pastor Bob Botsford of Horizon Christian Fellowship, who's been very outspoken about his beliefs and preaching his version of the gospel that Knapp is a sinful homosexual.

In the video embedded below Knapp puts it to Botsford saying:
KNAPP:   If I am a sinner and homosexuality is a sin, let's just go on that premise for a moment. But what separates that particular sin out from the fact that I'm angry or mad at someone or that I cheat or maybe, you know -- what separates that out as so grievous to you that we have to sit here and have this type of conversation?
BOTSFORD: Well, it's interesting. There's -- sin is sin. You're absolutely right. And we all have sin.
KNAPP: So, why are we -- why am I -- why aren't you in this seat and I'm in the other seat condemning you on national television?
KNAPP:  I will say this to you again on air. I have spiritual leadership in my life.  The pastoral counsel of those who are dear to me, who understand the Scripture as sacred text. You are not that man in my life. Speak to your congregation --  You do not know me, and don't have the right to speak to me in the manner which you have publicly.
Of course, in the video, Botsford interrupts her last statement about five times.  The full transcript is below.

These Christians that preach their bigotry veiled by love are bullies.  They are disrespectful of the separation of church and state in this country and of the inalienable rights of each human being.

They are also flawed in their logic.

If human being are so inherently sinful (original sin for Catholics, concupiscence for Protestants, etc.), so unable to know what is right and wrong, and so prone to sin and falling away from their god, then wouldn't it follow that any one sinful person's interpretation of their scriptures is just as flawed, sinful, and illegitimate as the next?

The fact that demigod Christian leaders like Ted Haggard have sex with male prostitutes, the last two Catholic Popes have conspired to enable child rape, that some Muslim clerics are fighting for the right of husbands to rape their wives to death, that numerous Christian fundamentalist preachers are so blatantly racist, and that untold numbers of Christian politicians, pastors, and religious leaders commit adultery and get divorced, which are sins condemned more clearly and frequently in their scriptures, proves how sinfully flawed, depraved, addicted--whatever religious buzzword you want to insert--the leaders and members of these institutions are.

Therefore, it's likely that these leaders' interpretations of their scriptures are sinfully flawed, as much, if not even moreso than any lay person, who picks up a holy book.

Most parents would quit going to a swimming pool if the lifeguards were having sex with children in the closets of the locker rooms.  Most women would quit going to a restaurant if they were told they had to sit in a separate section than their husbands.  Most LGBT persons would quit patronizing businesses that had posters on the walls saying "Gays are sinners."   And most people of color would walk out of a job interview if the interviewer told them that their bylaws justified slavery.

But, when churches do these things, when churches subject people to discrimination, bigotry, sexism, racism, and homophobia, people keep sitting their butts in the pews and dropping their coins in the collection plate.

Why is it that Americans check their brains (and their self-respect) at the door when they enter their churches?

Here is the transcript from this section of the interview via

KING: Do you believe Jennifer is going to go to hell?

BOTSFORD: Larry, God is the judge. I'm just here to --

KING: You're judging her.

BOTSFORD: Well, am I?

KING: Sure.

BOTSFORD: I'm here out of love. I don't have a --

KING: You said she's a sinner.

BOTSFORD: I'm not condemning you. Listen, I'm here because I love you. And I told you that off-air, I'll say it on air. I'm here because I'm concerned. I'm here as a family member.

KNAPP: You get my phone number.

BOTSFORD: You calling yourself a Christian still as part of the family of God saying, as I said in the blog, Jen, come home. Come back. Come out.

KNAPP: I will say this to you again on air. I have spiritual leadership in my life.

KNAPP: The pastoral counsel of those who are dear to me, who understand the Scripture as sacred text. You know, also, want to --

BOTSFORD: I'm not sure they do, Jen.

KNAPP: Don't interrupt me. You are not that man in my life. Speak to your congregation --

BOTSFORD: I agree. I'm not saying that I'm you're spiritual authority.

KNAPP: You do not know me, and don't have the right to speak to me in the manner which you have publicly.

BOTSFORD: Well, I do have a role to stand up for truth.

KNAPP: In your congregation and your community.

KNAPP: But do not -- I'm asking you not to do that. I ask you not say that you're doing that on my behalf.

BOTSFORD: I'm here as a representative of Jesus Christ.

KNAPP: That's good.

KING: But you are judging. You are judging.

Altar Chimps, the Daily Show's Cure for the Catholic Sexual Abuse Crisis

"You're Welcome" with John Hodgman.
The Daily Show With Jon StewartMon - Thurs 11p / 10c
You're Welcome - Church Scandal Prevention
Daily Show Full EpisodesPolitical HumorTea Party

Just to recap.  Here are Hodgman's prescriptions for preventing priest-perpetuated pedophilia:
  • Prevention by replacing cassocks with button fly jeans and altar boys with altar chimps
  • Kill the Mood by desexifying the Mass: no wine, no incense, no more boy sopranos
  • Accountability via maximum security monasteries
To recap, here are the steps for remodeling the Catholic confessional in order to assure the safety of children, who must confess their sins to a priest who stand in for a two thousand year old anti-clerical radical named Jesus.

Replace wooden confessional walls with stone

Replace the flimsy screen with five-inch bulletproof glass

To ensure the safety of the child on the other side, place a couple of armed guards next to the priest

Subordinating Women and Child Sexual Abuse in Catholic Church

In reaction to the signature that shows Pope Benedict XVI refused to defrock child rapist Father Stephen Kiesle of Oakland, columnist Maureen Dowd discussed her experience, as a Catholic woman, and how she moved from judging Islam's abuses of women into the realization that the Catholic Church does the same thing: using scripture and tradition to subjugate women to a second class status.

Dowd's is one of the finest pieces I have seen on the Catholic Church in quite some time.

I've been asking the same question for years: how do Catholic women remain in a church where they don't have equal status as men?

The women, with whom I've been able to discuss this question, have responded in various ways, including: hoping to still change the church from within, being used to it, needing the Catholic sacraments because communion in other churches doesn't have the "real presence" of Jesus, and/or fearfully admitting "I don't know why I stay."

As a gay Catholic, who's god-given sexuality was deemed intrinsically depraved, and as victim of sexual abuse, when I began asking "Why do I stay?" I realized that it was time to move on and seek truth, peace, and joy elsewhere.

When I was in Saudi Arabia, I had tea and sweets with a group of educated and sophisticated young professional women.  I asked why they were not more upset about living in a country where women’s rights were strangled, an inbred and autocratic state more like an archaic men’s club than a modern nation. They told me, somewhat defensively, that the kingdom was moving at its own pace, glacial as that seemed to outsiders.  How could such spirited women, smart and successful on every other level, acquiesce in their own subordination?
I was puzzling over that one when it hit me: As a Catholic woman, I was doing the same thing.  I, too, belonged to an inbred and wealthy men’s club cloistered behind walls and disdaining modernity. I, too, remained part of an autocratic society that repressed women and ignored their progress in the secular world.  I, too, rationalized as men in dresses allowed our religious kingdom to decay and to cling to outdated misogynistic rituals, blind to the benefits of welcoming women’s brains, talents and hearts into their ancient fraternity.
To circumscribe women, Saudi Arabia took Islam’s moral codes and orthodoxy to extremes not outlined by Muhammad; the Catholic Church took its moral codes and orthodoxy to extremes not outlined by Jesus. In the New Testament, Jesus is surrounded by strong women and never advocates that any woman — whether she’s his mother or a prostitute — be treated as a second-class citizen.
Negating women is at the heart of the church’s hideous — and criminal — indifference to the welfare of boys and girls in its priests’ care.
The church that through the ages taught me and other children right from wrong did not know right from wrong when it came to children. Crimes were swept under the rectory rug, and molesters were protected to molest again for the “good of the universal church.” And that is bad, very bad — a mortal sin.

An Atheist's Guide to Lent: Part Three, Almsgiving

Welcome back to An Atheist's Guide to Lent: How to Lose god and Find Peace in Forty Days or Less!

We've already covered the Lenten tenants of fasting and prayer, so that leave us atheist almsgiving.  Many religious people have been conditioned to believe human beings are intrinsically concupiscent, "fallen,"  and sinfully inclined and that without religious salvation, humans can't do good.  Well, that just isn't so.  We non-believers have consciences and do good deeds.  Join us for forty day.  Give a forty day god-fast and atheist almsgiving a try!

  1. From your atheist "prayer" exercises considering the frail mysteries of unknowing, life, the planet, and the universe, look at how you interact with the world and ask yourself how you want to be remembered, known.   Honor those you love who have died, by keeping them alive in your actions, embodying the best of their essence and learning from their shortcomings and mistakes.  Do good because it honors them, it honors the future, and it honors the every person with whom you come into contact.
  2. Give credit where credit is due.  Quit blaming the devil, sin, or evil, and admit that you are the one that is capable of hurting others.  Quit putting off changing your ways for the better to the next life, because god will forgive you.  There will be no divine "do over."  Accept yourself, as you are, here and now.  Acknowledge your gifts and limitations, and then go do what is good, because you only have one life to make a difference.
  3. Give alms to future generations by doing something that will decrease your carbon footprint in the world, because to a non-theist this is the only world, the one chance we've got.  There will be no parousia, no apocalyptic cleansing, and no rebirth into eternal life for the "righteous."  Planet Earth is at risk thanks to "dominion" theology, which gives us the "right" to use the planet for whatever purpose we see fit, and hypocritical religious fundamentalists, who decry "sinful" scientific knowledge (evolution, psychology, global warming, medicine, etc.) but are quick to use scientific advances (swords, guns, bombs, airplanes, biological weapons, etc.) to kill in the names of their gods.
  4. Research aid organizations that are god-free, that give aid to all persons without any imposition of personal religious beliefs or expectation that those receiving the aid must conform or convert.  Give because it helps others, not because you fear partial eternity in some purgatorial suburb of hell, while your loving, omnipotent, and compassionate god watches from a heavenly perch until satisfied with the torture you've endured and welcomes you into "loving" bliss.
Thus ends our journey through the Lenten practices of prayer, fasting, and almsgiving.  If any of your other free thinkers, post-theists, agnostics, and atheists have other prescriptions for these "Lenten" practices, please add them to the comments below.
So, what do you believers have to lose?  You can always quit and return to your pre-Lenten ways at any time, but maybe you'll come to see that non-believers are capable of choosing and doing good..
What's holding you back.  I dare you.   Give up god for Lent.
